Traditional cafe in Lake District

"The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery" in Ambleside, England, is a traditional, family-run café and bakery that has held a special place in the heart of the Lake District since its founding in 1975. Located in the picturesque town of Ambleside, it is a magnet for locals, regular visitors, and tourists exploring the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Run by the Fielding family, the business has evolved over the decades from a small café with five tables into a thriving establishment that now spans two floors, offering not only on-site dining but also a variety of takeaway baked goods. It combines traditional values with a modern approach and has received multiple awards for its quality, being recognized as one of the best places to eat in the Lake District.

The café’s menu is diverse and places great emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. A standout dish is the namesake "Hot Apple Pie," offered in two versions – plain or enhanced with spices and sultanas. This apple pie is a bestseller, featuring a buttery crust and aromatic filling that appeals to both purists and food lovers. For a hearty meal, the "Cumberland Sausage Pie" is a popular choice, a savory pie filled with spicy sausage that reflects the regional cuisine. The "Bath Buns" also deserve mention – these sweet, slightly sticky rolls are a classic often served fresh from the oven and are a true delight with butter. The breakfast offerings include options like the "Vegetarian Breakfast" with avocado, celebrated for its fresh ingredients and generous portions. To round off the meal, the "Millionaire’s Shortbread," a rich treat with chocolate and caramel, perfectly satisfies sweet cravings.

The bakery is the heart of the operation, with baked goods made fresh on-site daily. In addition to classics like simple white bread and crusty baguettes, there are also modern creations such as sourdough breads and gluten-free options that expand the offerings. The sandwiches made from these breads are particularly popular among hikers, who take them in convenient boxes for the road. The drink selection is noteworthy as well: alongside freshly ground coffee, there are homemade lemonades like "Raspberry Lemonade," which refreshes on warm days, and hot apple juice variations that warm you up in cooler weather.

Family-run restaurant with local ingredients

The atmosphere at "The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery" is inviting and versatile. The café features several seating areas, including cozy indoor spaces and an outdoor area that is highly appreciated in nice weather. The décor is functional yet charming, with a hint of rusticity that encourages relaxed lingering. The restaurant is family-friendly, with high chairs and a child-friendly menu, and emphasizes accessibility with a side entrance. The service is friendly and efficient, marked by a team that has been part of the establishment for decades, adding a personal touch.

Cozy cafe with kid-friendly menu

A special feature is the connection to the local community and the emphasis on sustainability. The ingredients come from regional suppliers whenever possible – from the butcher to the milkman to the miller – and the kitchen constantly experiments with new recipes to keep the menu fresh. In addition to the café and bakery, the business also offers accommodations, including stylish rooms above the bakery and holiday cottages nearby, making it a comprehensive experience for visitors.

Really enjoyable food and a reasonably varied selection. Children’s menu needs more healthy options , as there is too much fried foods. General service was prompt and food was great with good sized portions. Prices very reasonable. Can’t comment on rooms as only attended for lunch.

Unable to comment on rooms as we only used the café. Service was quick and efficient and the food and drinks were good. The toasted bath buns were so good that we visited their bakery to buy some to take home with us.

One of the best places I’ve been for labelling which cakes are vegan, and there was real choice as to what to have. The spiced apple pie was epic, and the black coffee was really good, it genuinely takes real talent to make a great tasting takeaway black coffee. Lovely

I didn't stay over at the hotel, but I did go to the cafe to get drink and a dessert. I got the vine fruit loaf and spiced apple juice, both of which were lovely!

We have been coming here on an off since we started at Charlotte Mason College back in 1990! It really is a must visit if you are in Ambleside. The breakfasts in particular are sensational and we always grab one of their filled rolls before heading out for a walk. Some of the staff have been working there for a LONG time, (Martin for example!) which says a lot about both the place and the owner.

Friendly service both in the cafe & bakery. Delicious and fresh breakfast. Nicest Cumberland sausages I’ve ever had. Their shop is so cute too, we bought one of their apple pies and some flapjacks, both delicious! Would consider coming back to the Lake District just to visit here 🍏

This cafe is excellent! My wife, my 2 month old son and I came into this cafe today and had a cornish pasty, the chaat chip sharer and an apple pie and they were all delicious. The service was brilliant as well and they were very accommodating to us all. I would definitely recommend it 😁

Visiting Ambleside for the umpteenth time but first breakfast here in this cafe. Came with Jorvic's cousin Deric who rarely goes anywhere. In season people queue to eat here. No queue on a late January Wednesday. Card only payment and asks for a tip before even served. Very odd! ( There is a tip jar where cash is welcome, of course.) Prices in Ambleside reflect the tourist trade. A first for me, the full Lakeland breakfast at £12 does not include bacon, £2 extra. ( bit like the B&B'sb that are bed only, no breakfast!) Actually ordered the breakfast bun at £8.50 and curried beans, bombay mix and spinach at £9. Coffee £3.20. Surprisingly large cafe. 3 rooms plus outside seating. Enjoyed the food but not the set up.

We stopped here for a cup of tea and a cake, the front of the shop looked promising with delicious looking cakes displayed in the window, however this was just the bakery, and the cafe was accessed around the side. We were seated by the staff, who to their credit were pleasant and friendly, and given a menu. We did feel that the prices were quite high at almost £6 each for a brownie and a slice of apple pie, however ordered hoping to be impressed by what we were served. Unfortunately the brownie was tiny and quite dry, and accompanied by tasteless and icy gritty ice cream and the slice of spiced sultana apple pie turned out to be a small square of pie rather than a generous slice, which was reasonably pleasant in taste but very unremarkable, served with some rather tasteless and synthetic like whipped cream. Far from the home made tasty generous portions we hoped for given the price. Had the portions been smaller than expected but clearly high in quality and taste we would not be leaving this rating in our review. We understand that the cost of everything has gone up for businesses, and we don't mind paying more for quality but this was not. The whole experience had the feel of catering for tourists with more money than sense, and paying just over £17 for two mugs of Yorkshire tea and two mediocre traybake cakes left us feeling very disappointed. Not good value for money and just another generic tourist trap among many in the town, which only seems to have overpriced eating places and endless outdoor shops, no real atmosphere despite having some lovely buildings and scenery, a real shame. We would not return to this cafe or to Ambleside.

Stopped by for food before a hike and came back for round 2 the next day! Great sandwiches - they come in a cardboard tray so didn't get squashed in our bags on the way up a mountain. Across the days we had coffees, spiced apple slice, lemon and blueberry frangipane, scones and sandwiches, all great, highly recommend.

Stopped here on our way through the lakes. Friendly and accommodating staff, nicely decorated space which is accessible for dogs. The apple pie was gorgeous, decent portion and quick service. Would definitely recommend a visit if passing through.
